Today the metro service from Delhi to Gurgaon started. I had a first hand experience as i went to the station to pick up a friend. I couldn’t help wonder whether the Metro would be the solution to our traffic problems, as it is made out to be ? I don’t think so. And here’s why :
I live about a couple of kms from the biggest metro station in gurgaon called Huda City Centre. At the roundabout other than the metro station ; there is a huge health institute being constructed by Fortis which will be up and running soon. Other than that there is also Max Hospital. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that there will be traffic and jams.
The root cause of the problem is the lack of public transport. You wake up one fine morning thinking about visiting ur frnds in Delhi; and even though you live only a km or so away from the station , the question is How the heck do you get there ? There are no buses , no autos and no rickshaws. You are forced to take your car. But there aint any parking space either. So you decide to drive to delhi as usual. On the way however you are struck by an unforseen traffic jam. Why ? because everyone going to the metro station has parked there cars on the road (due to lack of sufficient parking space) creating a havoc. You are left sweating in the heat, cursing the metro.
DMRC has already announced that it does not plan to run any feeder buses in Gurgaon. Traffic and chaos ahead.
PS: I hate, absolutely hate traffic.
