James Joyce, Richard Feynman Encoded in Venter’s synthetic DNA

Well what has James Joyce got to do with synthetic gnomes etc. ?

I recently wrote an article titled ‘Bespoke Life’ about the development of human modified bacteria using synthetic genomes by Craig venter. I came across an interesting piece of news regarding this synthetic DNA. It turns out that Venter in order to distinguish this synthetic DNA from the natural DNA during the reproduction of the bacteria , included quotes by James Joyce, Richard Feynman and J. Robert Oppenheimer in the DNA code. Crazy ?

Apparently the quotes are – “TO LIVE, TO ERR, TO FALL, TO TRIUMPH, TO RECREATE LIFE OUT OF LIFE.” – James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man; “SEE THINGS NOT AS THEY ARE, BUT AS THEY MIGHT BE.”-A quote from an Oppenheimer biography, American Prometheus; “WHAT I CANNOT BUILD, I CANNOT UNDERSTAND.” – Richard Feynman. To top it all the guy included his email address, for anyone deciphering his code.

PS: James Joyce happiness at hearing this news would have dissipated soon if he knew that natural reproduction is never perfect and mutilatons arise in the DNA code thus distorting his quote.
