Doubts over dreams

In Uncategorized on May 17, 2010 by Vikas

Thankful to my summer holidays I had a great pleasure of taking a pleasant nap during the day when doing something in Delhi’s sweltering heat was next to impossible. During the nap, I had a  lucid dream.(I have not the faintest of ideas remaining, concerning the majority of the dream)

There was a course in color science in the sem which just finished during which I had the idea to ask about the details of color blind people.(though I did not ask the question). Out of no apparent reason surprisingly after the nap I began to think what constitute our dreams hence the post.

Blind People Dream

Brain is strong enough to provide virtually anything to conduce sleep in a human being. People who become blind after birth can see images in their dreams. People who are born blind do not see any images, but have dreams equally vivid involving their other senses of sound, smell, touch and emotion.Similar is the case for color blind people.

Remembering the dream

There is no retention in the memory of the dream. Within minutes of waking most of the dream is gone. I assume many of you know about the poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. If not look here(it is really interesting). There are many other cases too, like that of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley was also conceptualized during a dream.

Everybody Dreams

People who say do not dream are either very very dumb to remember whatever little part our brain is able to salvage or are patient of some serious psychological syndrome.

We Only Dream of What We Know

Our dreams are frequently full of strangers who play out certain parts – did you know that your mind is not inventing those faces – they are real faces of real people that you have seen during your life but may not know or remember?(never underestimate the brain)

Dreams are not about what they are about

If you dream about some particular subject it is not often that the dream is about that. Dreams speak in a deeply symbolic language. The unconscious mind tries to compare your dream to something else, which is similar.

P.S:

When you are snoring, you are not dreaming.

Last episode of House coming up, what would I do next this summer break ?

Weird post, but interesting if you think about it.

  1. Science doesnt understand our need to sleep and so ofcourse doesnt understand dreamimg. Half the problems of all science would be solved by understanding the relationship b/w Mind and Body.
